PROJECT INFORMATION

Family and Consumer Sciences / McClelland Park

Description

This gift-funded, new facility, named McClelland Park, houses the John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The Norton School is comprised of two academic units and supports three auxiliary institutes. The project addressed both the quality and quantity of space, and consolidated the programs into one location.

Design Intent

Conceived as an icon for the Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences, McClelland Park showcases multicultural diversity as a welcoming entry point for families, business and community members, faculty and students. The showplace of the project is its "family plaza", a civic living room with shade and ample space for gathering. Dedicated to honoring children and families, and the study of their relationships, the plaza forms an oasis for informal gatherings, study groups and a play area for children using services or involved in research. Inside, classrooms and administrative areas adjoin faculty and research spaces. The building's innovative design anchors the entry to the modern Science Concourse while respecting the historic core of the campus.
